Youth Challenge Academy mission is to provide Georgia's "at-risk" youth with academic and life skills training aimed to improving employment potential and creating productive citizens.
The Georgia Chapter, established in 1993, is located at the National Guard Training Center, Fort Stewart, GA. A second campus, established in 2000, is located at Ft. Gordon, GA.
Youth challenge training is divided into three phases: a two-week residential pre-challenge phase, a twenty week residential challenge phase and a twelve month post residential phase.
The Academy is modeled after a U. S. army basic training company whose structure creates a strictly enforced, disciplined environment. Cadets are trained in traditional drill and ceremony, military customs and courtesies, teamwork and military Leadership. Cadets are also trained in physical fitness, first aid, CPR and survival classes.
Military Life Skills training prepares Cadets for meeting future adult obligations. Subject areas include 150 hours of the following: finances, health and hygiene, family planning, stress management, insurance and citizenship. Upon completion of Life Skills and the GED, Cadets are eligible for optional post-secondary instruction.
Academic training begins with GED preparation classed. Once GED is obtained, Cadets who qualify may enroll in college-level courses offered by local colleges or technical schools.
Work Skills are skills needed to gain and maintain employment Cadets learn to identify personal skills, interests and abilities. They learn to write resumes, complete job applications and participate in job interviews.
Students completing the program successfully are awarded three separate diplomas, The Youth Challenge Academy Diploma, the General Equivalency Diploma, and the Richard Arnold Adult High School Diploma.
